Every website owner dreams of being positioned in the top 3 of Google. However, many are unaware that this is long-term work. Only time will be profitable to attract the graces of this web giant. Indeed, it is necessary to use patience, but also not to put all your eggs in one basket.

This article aims to review the basics of internal meshing and present 5 strategies that our team of SEO experts applies daily.

First, it is essential to define what the internal mesh designates. It corresponds to all the links between the different pages of the same website. The internal mesh groups together all the links that make it possible to navigate a site from one page to another.

It is essential from the very beginning of the website design to establish the silo of the site to determine the contents that we want to link. This prioritization will make it possible to better organize pages, articles, and even products on an e-commerce site.

Thus, some pages will be favored and they also strengthen the PageRank. The authority of pages is determined by the number of links present on a page. So you have to be careful not to "cannibalize" a page that is more important than another, for example.

Many website developers overlook the importance of properly referencing categories and subcategories. The latter allows both users and search engines to send signals. For example, by listing different articles on our social media management service, it is easier to click on the category that takes us to the list of articles related to the topic in question.

Even if the menu and submenus are internal links, they are not enough for the internal mesh. Indeed, maybe a new web page created (or an article) is not automatically attached to a particular menu. It should be remembered when optimizing your website that a new page must be well designed to be visible on search engines.

The last point to remember about the concept of internal meshing: determine the incoming links in advance. Indeed, during SEO writing, SEO specialists structure the skeleton of an article beforehand. Inbound links are used to provide readers with more details about a topic that has already been discussed in another article or on a web page.

Like many strategies that influence web SEO, internal meshing includes its codes and small optimization tricks. Concretely, it is about creating hypertext links that will redirect Internet users and facilitate their navigation from your site. But to improve your SEO, the mesh must give relevant information and be built on a well-crafted logic. Without further ado, we present you with 5 ways to perfect your SEO mesh strategies.

1. Choose your anchor text well.

Two elements make up the links that you insert on your web pages: the anchor text and the destination address. While the destination address represents the concrete link where the user is redirected, the anchor text is characterized by a set of words on which he will click to land on this new address. And this anchor text is extremely important for your SEO strategies.

On the one hand, the link anchor should be consistent with the content of your article and the landing page. As you probably already know, Google sanctions optimization attempts that do not bring any value to your content.

Your anchor text should remain in the semantic field of your page and be related to the destination address. In addition, it should blend naturally with the rest of your structure and not fall right in the middle like a hair in the soup.

For example, if your page deals with honey and you want to redirect your visitor to a partner producer, it will be better to write "discover responsible honey with the products of [producer's name]" than just write the name of the partner.

It is necessary to be vigilant if a page of your site contains several links that refer to the same content. Indeed, Google's algorithm will only consider the first link for your natural referencing. This means that you will need to optimize that first link with relevant keywords. The other links can facilitate navigation and engagement of your targets as much as possible.

2. Reduce nofollow links in favor of the do-follow links

There are two attributes for the links present on your pages: the dofollow and the nofollow. In summary, dofollow links are the ones you want to get noticed by Google. They apply to your content and are aimed at improving your ranking in searches. On the contrary, nofollow links are not useful for your SEO, like the link that is used to link to your legal notices. So, how to use these attributes for your internal mesh?

First, you should know that the dofollow and nofollow attributes fit into a tag. However, if you do not put the corresponding tag, the link is automatically understood by Google as a dofollow link. So remember to properly characterize your nofollow link for your SEO strategy, so that it is not considered by the algorithm ... at least in principle.

We would have the reflex to put all the irrelevant links in nofollow to optimize his page. The dofollow links would thus have much more weight in the algorithm. However, for a few years now, Google has decided on the indexing of links on its own. Thus, even with the nofollow attribute, there is a risk that your link will be considered and negatively influence your web SEO.

The goal is therefore to reduce nofollow links on your page as much as possible.

3. Use the silo method

Silo meshing is a technique that comprises cutting the sections of your site according to specific themes. Each section then presents itself as a completely independent part of the rest of the structure.

The method may seem quite logical when you think about it. It is used by most e-commerce sites to facilitate the user's experience. Once a section has been chosen by the latter, the links used in the mesh of this category do not link to the rest of the site. This makes it possible to give more weight to each section by optimizing its mesh.

For a successful silo structure, however, a few rules must be observed :

  • Links in a category should not link to a different section ;
  • The links in a section should deal with similar topics ;
  • Pages of the same level must be linked by links ;
  • The upper levels must make connections to the lower levels and vice versa.

4. Work on the structure of your URLs

Earlier in the article, we explained links are composed of two essential elements: the anchor text and the destination address, which itself comprises a URL. This second part is just as important as the first for your SEO.

Your URLs must, first, be completely consistent with your content. We will prefer to name them according to the title of the page or the destination article. As always in SEO practice, the goal is to make it clear to Google (and the visitor!) what he is currently consulting.

But naming its URLs without adding superfluous information also makes it easier to manage the site. As you probably understood, the silo structure allows precise nesting of addresses. Thanks to simple URLs, changing a category title does not influence the position of the lower pages (because you will not have added the name of this category in their URLs).

5. Avoid fake links

What is a fake link? The principle is rather simple, as long as you know the functionality of a link on your website. Concretely, a link is used to refer your visitor from one place to another. These "moving" links are inserted using HTML coding in the "a" tag, accompanied by the "href" attribute.

However, other elements that may be like links are present on your site. This is the case for every clickable button that causes an action in the background of your pages.

For example, it is enough for the Internet user to click on an item to add a product to his shopping cart or join your social networks. If you use HTML coding for this kind of link, Google may get confused about elements that, concretely, do not link to any specific content.

You can avoid fake links by coding these elements in the JavaScript programming language.

Following these 5 rules will allow you to significantly improve your strategy. One last tip for the road? Exploit ALL the important links on your website by linking them together. A link left behind will not play–or very little - on your SEO.
